Stony Point Bed and Breakfast is a three story stone Colonial style home. John Kilgore Johnston built the home in 1920. He was the Tyrone Division Superintendent of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Mr. Johnston served in Tyrone for almost 25 years. During his tenure with the PRR he served in many areas of the PRR system and he was the president of two small railroads in Western Pennsylvania at the time. His first home in Tyrone was on Lincoln Avenue at what is today the American Legion Howard Gardner Post #281. This home sat adjacent to the railroad line and was very dirty, hot and grimy throughout the year. In order to better care for his family, he and his wife Mattie purchased the land on the other side of the ridge behind their Lincoln Avenue home and built this structure as their summer retreat.

Since its construction, this house has had three owners. We continue to do research to learn more about the Johnston family. The second owners were the John Newlin family. Mr. Newlin was a well respected local attorney and farmer. He and his wife Theda Newlin purchased the property in 1942 and raised their five children here. Mr. Newlin passed away in 1972 and Theda followed in 2001. The McNitt’s purchased the property from the Newlin children in 2002. The McNitt’s secured the help of several local artisans to help in the restoration of the home. The artisans included the Renovators general contractor, Walk’s Trades - electrical, Vaughn Border painting, and John Reda conservationist. With the help of many friends and family over the course of 10 months the home was restored and opened for business in October, 2003.
